Job Opening: Accountant I

job openingThe Mid-Region Council of Governments is accepting applications for the Accountant I position.


Under supervision of the Senior Finance Manager, performs a variety of accounting duties, requiring accuracy and attention to detail.

Essential Functions:

  1. Coordinates all phases of payroll, including the following: reviews the entering of payroll on electronic timesheets, ensures that data is transferred to City’s mainframe on a timely basis, may act as timekeeper. Summarizes and verifies Labor Distribution.
  2. Coordinate and manage daily accounts payable activities including verifying all invoices received to purchase orders, ensuring all invoices have been properly approved for payment, preparing cash disbursements, entering all invoices into Abila MIP Accounts Payable Module, researching vendor payments, and tracking outstanding invoices.  
  3. Respond to inquiries and research problems regarding unpaid vendor invoices and payment discrepancies.
  4. Prepare and record cash receipts for all payments received on a daily basis.
  5. Prepare aged payable report for supervisor’s approval for payment and issue checks to vendors.
  6. Monitor MRCOG purchase card accounts; verify invoices and amounts and enter into Abila MIP Fund Accounting System.
  7. Scan pertinent financial and any relative supporting documentation into the ApplicationXtender Document Manager system on a timely basis; audit and verify image for clarity and completeness as required by the MRCOG Imaging Plan.
  8. On a quarterly basis, review open PO’s and identify PO’s needing to be closed.

Other Functions

  1. Maintain and update vendor 1099 form information; provide data and verify year-end IRS 1099 form submissions.


Related education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Minimum Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or a related field, plus three (3) years of financial accounting experience in any of the following areas: accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger, or a related financial field. Must have proficient computer skills, with emphasis on fund accounting software and spreadsheets.
