biketowork2008.gifABQ Ride’s Strive Not to Drive Week culminates in Bike to Work Day on Friday May 16, 2008. On this day, City of Albuquerque, NM Rail Runner Express and BikeABQ encourage commuters to try riding a bicycle to work and celebrate those who already do so.

This year the event is extending beyond Albuquerque to the greater metro region with a food stop in Los Lunas. Many commuters are discovering new ways of commuting from surrounding areas by starting their commute on the NM Rail Runner Express and then completing the trip by bicycle, bus or foot. The Bike to Work Day event is designed to give commuters both information and incentive to use a bicycle or other alternative transportation to get to work. Bike to Work Day food stops in Albuquerque will be open from 6:15 AM to 8:30 AM and in Los Lunas from 5:30 AM to 8:00 AM.

At each stop bicycle commuters can enjoy a free breakfast from Einstein Bros Bagels and General Mills. In addition, reflective leg bands, blinking tail lights, reflective vests and t-shirts will be given away while supplies last. Knowledgeable volunteers, city & county planners as well as ABQ Ride and NM Rail Runner Express staff will be available at each breakfast stops to talk to cyclists about up-and-coming bicycle and other alternative transit projects.

Bernalillo County Manager, Thaddeus Lucero and Albuquerque Mayor, Martin Chavez will be attending and scheduled to speak shortly before 8:00am at the Downtown Breakfast Stop.
