The Mid-Region Council of Governments provides metropolitan and rural transportation planning for the entire four-county area; this includes extensive data collection for traffic monitoring, analysis of current conditions, and traffic forecasts of future conditions.
MRCOG’s transportation planning data and forecasts are used by local and state agencies to develop and complete transportation projects. MRCOG uses the information for the urban area to develop a regional 20-year long range transportation plan (Metropolitan Transportation Plan) and the short-term Transportation Improvement Program.
Riders Enjoying the Sandoval Easy Express, a Service of Rio Metro
Additonally, MRCOG is taking a regional approach to transportation with Rio Metro. Rio Metro is the regional entity for transit services in Sandoval, Bernalillo and Valencia Counties. Rio Metro also funds transit connections to various rail stations in conjunction with the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.
A number of bicycle commuters are looking forward to the completion of the Rio Grande Trail, a project managed by the Mid-Region Council of Governments. The Rio Grande Trail is one of the most popular multi-use trails in the region, and it's easy to understand why. On any given day, you can see parents with strollers, teenagers rollerskating, and a number of bicyclists using the trail for commuting. The trail follows the Rio Grande River and trail users can enjoy cottonwoods and other native vegetation, in addition to water fowl and other wildlife. Governor Richardson announced the Rio Grande Trail project in late 2004 and the Legislature provided $4 million in 2005 for the first phases of the project.
