The 2030 MTP addresses all modes of transportation, including pedestrians
2030 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)
The Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is a long range transportation plan that paints a picture of what Albuquerque's metropolitan area will look like 20 years from now in terms of population, employment, number of vehicles on roadways, etc. It also recommends transportation planning activities that need to take place to accommodate the anticipated growth: what roads need to be built or improved, what transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities need to be developed or improved, and how all these different projects and modes of transportation will work together.
Under federal law, all metropolitan areas with a population of more than 50,000 must have a long-range transportation plan. Our MTP allows the metropolitan area to access federal funds. In addition, if no long term transportation planning was done and the future was not prepared for, the existing infrastructure of our metropolitan area might not be able to handle increases in population, employment, or traffic, possibly leading to increased congestion, air pollution and other problems.
The 2030 MTP took effect June 30, 2007. Preparations have already begun for the next plan, the 2035 MTP, which will be adopted no later than June 2011.
