Recently Completed Projects:
Bernalillo County celebrated the newly-reconstructed Isleta Boulevard. Improvements to this key north-south connection include expansion to four lanes, intersection improvements from Rio Bravo Boulevard south to Arenal, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian enhancements.
Additionally, the City of Albuquerque created a new roundabout at 8th Street and Central Avenue. The traffic circle is the first-of-its-kind placed on an Albuquerque arterial. Although it takes a little time to learn how to navigate a roundabout, north-south connectivity along 8th Street is greatly improved. The roundabout also makes it much easier for those traveling by feet to cross the streets.
Albuquerque also has a new overpass over Interstate-40 at Washington. The newly widened overpass will help connect the commercial areas above I-40 with neighborhoods to the south.
Growth in Sandoval County continues to drive transportation projects. The City of Rio Rancho recently upgraded Unser Boulevard from Abrazo Road to Farol Road to four-lanes. Additional improvements are better drainage, improved medians, landscaping, bicyle lands, and pedestrian improvements. Also in Sandoval County, the construction of Paseo del Volcan from Unser Boulevard provides a vital connection to help serve the area's tremendous population growth.
Road improvements in metropolitan areas ensure safer travel for vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians, and are an important aspect of planning for long-term growth and an increasing population.
MRCOG is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area (AMPA). We are responsible for carrying out the metropolitan transportation planning process which includes developing transportation plans and programs. The most important of these are the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) and the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP); they are the tools for bringing federal transportation funds to the metropolitan area.
The 2030 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) projects how much growth will take place in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area over a 30 year period and recommends transportation projects to keep pace with that growth.
The Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) covers a six-year period and lists, in detail, all transportation projects that will receive federal transportation funds within that timeframe.
The Metropolitan Transportation Board (MTB) is the policy setting body for metropolitan transportation planning.
