Regional Digital Orthophotography

An Example of Orthophotography
Digital orthophotography is digital aerial photography that is planimetrically correct: the images show objects on the ground in their true geographic positions. Measurements of distances, angles and areas can be taken directly from the orthophotos. Digital orthophotography is important reference and base data used with Geographic Information System (GIS) software (what is GIS?).

MRCOG also provides these files to New Mexico Resource Geographic Information System (RGIS) Program so that other GIS professionals can access this valuable data. RGIS is a cooperative program between the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Information Technology Commission and serves as a digital data clearinghouse for geographic information for New Mexico.

2006 Regional Digital Orthophotography Project
1/2 Foot Resolution Data

In the Spring of 2006 MRCOG acquired over 1800 square miles of natural color, high resolution (1/2 foot GSD) digital orthoimagery in portions of 4 counties: Sandoval, Bernalillo, Valencia, and Socorro.

This was a cooperative project with 18 local, state and federal agencies participating. Project cooperators included: City of Albuquerque, Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo and Flood Control Authority, Bernalillo County, Isleta Pueblo, Kirtland Air Force Base, Village of Los Lunas, Mid-Region Council of Governments, Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, New Mexico Department of Transportation, Public Service Company of NM, City of Rio Rancho, Sandia Pueblo, Sandia National Laboratory, Sandoval County, Santa Ana Pueblo, Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Contral Authority, US Geological Survey, and Valley Improvement Association. Imagery was acquired in early April and July, 2006.

Bohannan Huston, Inc. (BHI) was the contractor for this project.

2005 Regional Digital Orthophotography Project
1/2 Foot Resolution Data

In early 2005, MRCOG partnered with the County of Santa Fe, the City of Santa Fe, the US Geological Survey, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation in acquiring high resolution (½ foot GSD) natural color digital orthophotography for an area in northern Santa Fe County, New Mexico of approximately 893 square miles.

Imagery was acquired in late April and early May of 2005. Bohannan Huston, Inc. was the contractor for this project.

2004 Regional Digital Orthophotography Project
One Foot Resolution Data

The MRCOG 2004 Digital Orthoimagery Project was a cooperative effort of local governments and other entities contracting for professional services with Bohannan Huston, Inc. (BHI) for the acquisition and production of high resolution natural color digital orthphotography. Project areas included portions of Bernalillo, Valencia, Sandoval, Santa Fe, and Torrance Counties, New Mexico. Approximately 2200 square miles of imagery was produced.

Imagery was acquired in late March of 2004 for all areas except those in southern Santa Fe and Torrance Counties. Imagery for these counties was acquired in June 2004.

Project cooperators included: City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico Department of Transportation, Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo and Flood Control Authority, US Geological Survey (Geography Division, Denver), Village of Los Lunas, Isleta Pueblo, Sandia National Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, and Valley Improvement Association.
