MRCOG hosts a wide array of 2000 Decennial Census data available for viewing and downloading.
Once released in early 2011, the 2010 Decennial Census will provide a 100% count of a few specific variables; population, age, sex, race, households and housing tenure. In 2000 it provided more detailed information including income, poverty, journey to work, education, and employment data. This kind of detailed data will now be available only from the American Community Survey. Decennial Census data are available for virtually every geographic level possible down to the smallest Census block level.
MRCOG hosts a wide array of Census data available for viewing and downloading.
The 2000 Decennial Census includes two types of data: 100-percent count and sample.
- The 100-percent count, or “short-form” data, includes the results from questions that were asked of all census respondents. The data pertain to population and households.
- Sample data, or “long-form” data, was collected from approximately one in every six households. There was some variation in the sampling: in rural areas the sample was one in every two households while in the densest urban areas the sample was one in every eight households. The data are much more detailed than the 100-percent count, and pertain to a wide array of demographic, housing, social, and economic variables.

The 2000 Census data formatted by MRCOG is available in Excel file format. The data has been organized by County, Place, Tribal Lands, and Census Tracts. Places include both municipalities and Census Designated Places (CDP).
A CDP is an unincorporated community which has been defined by the Census Bureau as a place. The Census Bureau with local input has defined the boundaries of the CDPs. Tribal Lands include both the area inside a reservation or pueblo as well as trust land. For enumeration purposes, the Census Bureau has subdivided counties into tracts.
