Commuting Data Print E-mail

The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) offers a set of special tabulations from the US Census Bureau pertaining to commuting characteristics by place of residence, place of work, and home to work flows. It is a cooperative effort sponsored by the State Departments of Transportation under a pooled funding arrangement with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). As the largest and most up-to-date survey of transportation data available for the region, the CTPP is a valuable dataset for transportation planners.

A variety of commuting characteristics and transportation profiles are available from MRCOG.

Available information includes travel times, mode share, vehicle ownership, and commutes by race, ethnicity, age and income status. The following pdfmap shows county-to-county average daily work commutes in 2000 306.68 Kb

At MRCOG, the CTPP is used for a variety of purposes including commuter rail planning, mass transit route planning, and for calibrating and improving the accuracy of our travel demand model. The CTPP is uniquely suited for travel analysis because the data are available at the Transportation Analysis Zone (TAZ) level, which are small geographic areas.

*Please keep in mind that CTPP data only pertain to work commutes, and don’t include shopping trips, medical trips or any other trip purpose.

2006-2008 Commuting Statistics

Place of Residence profiles contain information regarding vehicles available, household statistics, and mode of transportation by the commuter's origins (place of residence).

Place of Work profiles contain information regarding mode of transportation, travel time, and time of arrival to work by the commuter's destination (place of work).

2005-2007 Commuting Statistics

These profiles include data from both the 2005-2007 American Community Survey (ACS) and the Census 2000. The Profiles are designed to give transportation planners a handy way to examine trends by including two time points. However, because the survey methods are different, users need to understand how the ACS differs from the decennial census long form in 2000.

Notes: the profiles are available only for those areas meeting a 20,000 population threshold. Some geographies miss some or all profiles even if they have a poplulation of 20,000 or more. For these geographies, ACS source tables get suppressed because of a small number of sample cases.

Five transportation profiles are available:
