MRCOG’s DASZ datasets include current and forecast data that pertain to population, housing, employment, and school enrollment by Data Analysis Subzone (DASZ). DASZs are small units of geography that are compatible with MRCOG's transportation model. The datasets are created by MRCOG to project future travel demand in the region. However, their use extends beyond travel demand forecasting to land use planning, economic development and so on.

The pdf Data Dictionary provides definitions of the variables that may be included in each datase.

Historical DASZ Datasets

The 2000 DASZ dataset contains data from the 2000 Census, the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, and public school districts. The data have been adjusted into DASZ geography by MRCOG. Because 2000 was a Decennial Census year, MRCOG has added a number of variables from the 2000 Census outside of what is required by the travel model, which allows this data set to be used for a wide variety of purposes.

The 2008 and 2004 DASZ dataset were developed as updates to the 2000 dataset and created using building permits for new construction, school enrollment data, tax assessor data, aerial photography, and employer addresses as provided by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions and InfoUSA. For a comprehensive explanation of the 2008 dataset can be found at the following link:  2008 Socioeconomic Estimate by Data Analysis Subzone

The 2004 DASZ Dataset was developed as a partner dataset to the 2030 Forecast. The 2008 DASZ Dataset will serve as the base for the 2035 Forecast which will be released in 2011. The 2008 DASZ Dataset should not be compared to the 2030 Forecast.

2035 DASZ Forecast

The 2035 Socioeconomic Forecast that was created as a backdrop for the 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) was approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Board on October 16th, 2010. This forecast replaces the 2030 forecast, and is accompanied by two interim forecast years, 2015 and 2025. This dataset was designed as an input to MRCOG's travel demand model in order to project future transportation needs in the region and assist planners in prioritizing projects.

The 2035 Socioeconomic Forecast contains projections for population, housing, and jobs. It was developed with the assistance of a small area allocation model and includes inputs from developer and planner interviews, existing land use inventories, local development review cases, permits issued for new construction, aerial photography, and local address files. The regional projection for population was developed by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of New Mexico.

The 2035 socioeconomic forecast was adopted by the Metropolitan Transportation Board on October 15, 2010.  View the presentation here.

2030 DASZ Forecast

The 2030 DASZ Forecast dataset was created for the 2030 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). It has been replaced by the 2035 forecast. The forecast overview and methodology is provided in pdf 2030 Socioeconomic Forecasts by DASZ 769.32 Kb for the Mid-Region of New Mexico.
