Population: 1,584 (2000) Area: 6.1 Square Miles (2001)

Estancia, the county seat of Torrance County, is located in the central portion of the Estancia Basin on NM 41.

The Estancia basin is a generally flat area with no permanent streams, surrounded by mountains and highlands. Large salt flats and lagoons lie southeast of the Town. In ancient times, these salt flats were an important source of salt. The pre-Columbian Indian inhabitants of the area and later Spanish colonists mined salt from these flats for trade. Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument takes its name from this salt trade.

The Estancia area has been a cattle and sheep ranching area since the 19th century. The Town began with the arrival of the railroad around 1902. In the mid 20th century there was considerable farming activity with beans being a principal crop.

In the last decade, the local economy has been boosted by two major developments. A privately run detention facility operated by Corrections Corporation of America and employing several hundred people was built in the early 1990's. Other major employers in the Town are Estancia Public Schools and Torrance County. Total employment in the Town was about 850 in 2000. The corrections facility added jobs and accounted for a portion of the population increase as about 500 of the 800 increase in population over the past decade consisted of prison inmates.
