Los Ranchos de Albuquerque was named for the Elena Gallegos Grant (granted by the King of Spain) which was sometimes know as the Los Ranchos De Albuquerque Grant. The Village was incorporated in 1958. Los Ranchos is a low density community located in the Rio Grande valley north of downtown Albuquerque. Local policy has been to control development so as to preserve a rural residential atmosphere within the urbanized Albuquerque area. Commercial development is primarily along 4th Street which is the major commercial street through the "North Valley". In 2000, there were about 1900 persons employed in the Village. Approximately 20 percent of the employment located in the Village are in the retail sector which includes eating and drinking establishments. The government sector accounts for just under 20 percent of the employment. The services sector accounted for about 15 percent of employment. The largest employer is Albuquerque Public Schools.
