Village of Willard Print E-mail

Population: 240 (2000) Area: 0.8 Square Miles (2000)

Willard is located at the junction of US 60, NM 41, and NM 42. A main east-west line of the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway passes through the Village. Incorporated in 1910, Willard is an agricultural community in the southern part of the Estancia Basin. The Laguna del Perro and Salina Lake salt flats and lagoons, a source of salt for centuries, are located just east of the community.

The community grew, initially, as a rail shipping point for ranchers and dry-land bean farmers. In the 1940's farming started to decline and the community lost population. Recently, the dairy industry has grown in this area which has brought some growth to the community.
