Watch a screening of "The Garden" at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning
The Garden Film Screening November 30, 2011, 6-8pm George Pearl Hall Auditorium Introduction by Claudia Isaac, Associate Professor in Community and Regional Planning Discussion to follow
The APA UNM (student chapter of the American Planning Association) is hosting a series of movies that highlight the three CRP concentrations: Natural Resources, Physical Planning and Design, and Community Development. Our next and last film will be The Garden, which highlights the Community Development concentration and the discussion will be hosted by Claudia Isaac. All of these films hint at our relationship with the natural world and each are significant to the practice of planning. Please refer to the details below and the attached flyer for more information. Suggested donations for each event are $5 per student and $7 for others. APA UNM raises these funds to help students attend planning conferences.
About the film The 14 acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles was the largest of it's kind in the United States. It was started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992. Since that time, the South Central Farmers have created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now bulldozers threaten their oasis. The Garden is an unflinching look at the struggle between these urban farmers and the City of Los Angeles and a powerful developer who want to evict them.
