MRCOG is home to the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area (AMPA). Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are required by federal law for all urbanized areas with populations greater than 50,000. MPO's are responsible for carrying out metropolitan transportation plans and programs. The MPO for the AMPA is the Mid-Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MRMPO). The Metropolitan Transportation Board, composed of local elected leaders, sets policy for transportation issues in the urban area.

Activities undertaken by MRMPO that support long range and short range transportation planning include traffic monitoring and traffic counts, analysis of current socio-economic conditions and development of forecasts, travel demand forecasting, roadway safety analysis, transportation accessibility modeling, and mapping (GIS).

MRMPO's transportation planning data and forecasts are used by local and state agencies to develop and complete transportation projects. MRMPO uses the information for the urban area to develop a regional 20-year long-range transportation plan, the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), and the short-term Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The MTP and the TIP are the tools for bringing federal transportation funds to the metropolitan area.

Mid-Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MRMPO) Responsibilities

  • 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan  — The region's long range transportation plan. The MTP projects how much growth will take place in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area over a 20-plus year period and recommends transportation projects to keep pace with that growth.
  • TIP – The TIP covers a six-year period and lists, in detail, all transportation projects that will receive federal transportation funds within that timeframe.
  •  FY2012 Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP)  — The UPWP describes the transportation planning activities that will take place in the AMPA during Fiscal Year 2012.
  •  FY2010 Annual Performance and Expenditure Report — Consists of major tasks for the UPWP, the work completed for those tasks, a breakdown of the planning funds expended, and the amount of funding remaining.
