Long Range Metropolitan Transportation Planning Print E-mail

Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)

The Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is the Albuquerque area's long range transportation plan. It includes projections and forecasts of what Albuquerque's metropolitan area will look like 20 years from now in terms of population, employment, number of vehicles on roadways, etc. All regionally significant improvements planned for the transportation system must be included in the MTP. What roads need to be built or improved; what transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities need to be developed or improved; and how all these different projects and modes of transportation will work together are all questions the MTP intends to answer.

Under federal law, all metropolitan areas with a population greater than 50,000 must have a long-range transportation plan in order to access federal funds. Long-term transportation planning allows the region to plan for the infrastructure needed to handle increases in population, employment and travel demand to help mitigate congestion, air pollution and other problems. In Albuquerque, the long-range transportation plan is known as the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP).

Also under federal law, urbanized areas with a population greater than 200,000 shall have a Transportation Management Area (TMA) designated. The Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area (AMPA) is the TMA for this region. Transportation plans and programs within a TMA must be based on a continuing and comprehensive transportation planning process carried out by the MPO in cooperation with the State and transit operators.2035 MTP Cover
