Safe Routes to School

The 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan reinforces that safe routes to school are a priority for the region. The Safe Routes to School program improves pedestrian and bicycle access to schools so that students have safe and healthy alternatives for getting to school and back. The national Safe Routes to School website has useful information for communities wishing to develop an action plan.

Road Safety Audits

MRMPO can perform Road Safety Audits, which are formal safety performance examinations of existing or future roads or intersections. In cooperation with the City of Albuquerque, we will examine areas that have high levels of pedestrian fatalities and injuries upon request.

The first focus area, Albuquerque's West Central corridor, was audited in conjunction with the West Route 66 Sector Development Plan. The second focus area, the intersection of Central and San Mateo, was audited in conjunction with ABQ Ride prior to the implementation of Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART).
